About the region

West Kazakhstan region is located in the Western part of the Republic of Kazakhstan and is the gateway to the Central and southern regions of the Republic and the States of Central Asia. The region is located in the Central part of Eurasia, in the North-West of Kazakhstan. Completely located in Eastern Europe. It borders the Russian Federation. The total length of the border is 2,423 km. It borders on five regions of the Russian Federation: Astrakhan, Volgograd, Saratov, Samara, Orenburg and two regions of Kazakhstan: Aktobe and Atyrau, connected with them by rail, road, water and air transport.

The terrain is flat. Moreover, the altitude decreases from the North-East to the South-West of the region. In the region, there are several areas according to the features of the relief, including The General Syrt, the Emben plateau, the Caspian lowland.

In the North and North-East of the region there are spurs of the General Syrt and the pre-Ural plateau. South within the Caspian lowlands located tracts of sand Narynkum: the Highest Accum, Karagandin and others.

In the region there are about 200 rivers and streams with a total length of 4600 km, including the large rivers Ural, Chagan, Derkul, Kushum, Bolshoy and Maly Uzen, there are 144 lakes in the region, 94 of them are salty. The most significant are Shalkar, Fish Sakryl and the system of Kamysh-Samara lakes.

Shalkar lake is the largest and deepest reservoir of the West Kazakhstan region. The lake accumulates about 1.4 billion m3 of water, the area of the lake is 20 580 hectares (can increase to 24 000 hectares). Two rivers flow into the lake from the Eastern side: Isen Ankaty (Big Ankaty) and Sholak Ankaty (Small Ankaty), and one river Solyanka flows into the Ural river. In the North of West Kazakhstan region flows the Ural river, 250 km of its "steppe zone" is located on the territory of West Kazakhstan region. To the small rivers of the basin. On the territory of the West Kazakhstan region are Chagan, Derkul, Ilek, UTVA, Rubezhka, Bykovka, Embulatovka, Barbastau, etc. the Urals is one of the main waterways of special national importance not only low-water Kazakhstan, but also Russia.

In the region there are Kirsanovsky (area-61,0 thousand hectares), Budarinsky (area-80.0 thousand hectares) and Zhaltyrkulsky (area — 19,0 thousand hectares) state Zoological reserves. Climatic conditions

The climate is sharply continental. During the whole year strong winds blow, in the summer dry winds are frequent. The average temperature of January to -14 °C, July to +25 °C. the Absolute minimum temperature of -40 °C, the absolute maximum of 40 °C. Snow cover lasts 70 days in the South of the region and 140 days in the North. The annual rainfall in the South of the region is from 250 mm, and in the North up to 400 mm.
