Kazakhstan Global Investment Roundtable 2022 – The Search for the New Sources of Growth

Astana hosted the fifth Kazakhstan Global Investment Roundtable (KGIR-2022), organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan with the participation of NC KAZAKH INVEST JSC. Over 500 representatives of leading international companies and domestic businesses, investors and experts attended the event.

This year, at the plenary session, the speakers were the Minister of Agriculture and Food of the Hellenic Republic Georgios Georgantas, President of Alstom Andrew DeLeone, Chairman of the Presidium of NCE Atameken Raimbek Batalov, Chief Executive Officer and Member of the Board of INOKS Capital Nabil Mark Abdul-Massih and Chairman of the Agency for Strategic planning and reforms of the Republic of Kazakhstan Asset Irgaliyev. The moderator was the founder of Ryan Chilcote Productions, TV journalist for Bloomberg Television and CNN Ryan Chilcote. During the session, the speakers discussed the current investment realities, what needs to be done to attract a new wave of investments, the export potential of Kazakhstan, as well as the advantages of the country for investors from all over the world.

During the event, two panel sessions were held - "Ration and wealth: Investments in future agro-industrial complex" and "The new economy: adjusting to the different logistical system" The participants in the discussion from the agro-industrial complex were Kanat Sharlapaev, Chairman of the Board of Baiterek NMH JSC, Zhenis Oserbay, Vice Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Jean-Jacques Soulacrou, Deputy Head of the EIB Corporate Finance Department, Ashish Kaul, Regional Director for Central Asia and the UAE, INOKS Capital SA, and Alexander Garber, Founder of Prima Distribution LLP. The speakers discussed the impact of the geopolitical situation and the consequences of the pandemic on the problem of food security. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) predicts that limited access to fertilizers, sharp spikes in food and energy prices could lead to a new crisis. Experts agree that the answer to this challenge can be the transition to coordination and cooperation at the level of the world community, ensuring food independence through domestic food production.

As part of the panel session “New Economy: Adapting to a Different Logistic Reality”, the panelists discussed the fundamental changes taking place in the industry. Today, market participants face an important task in not only finding an affordable, but also a safe route. Geopolitical changes and sanction pressure are presenting the industry with new challenges, stimulating large-scale changes. These and other issues were discussed by the Head of the Department of the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kasym Tlepov, the Manager of the Astana International Financial Center Kairat Kelimbetov, the General Director of SEMURG INVEST LLP Nurzhan Marabaev, the Chairman of the Board of S Sistem Lojistik Hizmetleri A.Ş. Hussein Barlin, WiLAT Chairman, FlyDubai Kazakhstan General Manager Maria Kuznechevskaya, WB Deniz Chairman Gregory John Wojak, Skoda Transportation Strategy Director Roman Sorkin and Adani Group Head of Logistics Sandyip Mehta.

At the event, investors were awarded in various nominations. Fruit Art LLP and Altyn Shygys LLP were awarded in the nomination of the best investment project in the agro-industrial complex. In the nomination the largest employer were awarded KamaTyresKZ LLP, Astana Motors and RG Processing company.

As part of the round table, 24 documents were signed for a total amount of about $1.4 billion, including such projects as the creation of a Nuclear Medicine Center in the Aktobe region by the Turkish company Orhun Medical, the expansion of the Kuryk port infrastructure with the participation of the Adani Group, the construction of a mining and processing plant for the extraction and processing of lithium in the East Kazakhstan region with the participation of Alatau Lithium LLP, KAZAKH INVEST and HMS Bergbau AG, the construction of a wind farm in Astana by the Italian company Eni, the construction of a confectionery plant by the Polish company Stokson Modern Bakery, as well as production of rubber and plastic products for cars with the participation of Norplast and production of car seats by Astana Motors in Almaty.

The Kazakhstan Round Table on Global Investments KGIR is a key annual investment event in Kazakhstan, which has established itself as an effective dialogue platform for the state and the international investment community.
